Gail earned a Bachelor of Design degree with honors from the University of Florida and built a successful thirty-year career in interior design, twenty of those as founder and owner of PeopleSpace, Inc. a commercial design firm with many signature projects for local and national clients. After merging her company into a regional architectural firm in 1997 and establishing its commercial design department, she left in 1999 to pursue her life-long interest in fine art. During the next decade, she worked as a sculptor, creating 3-D mixed media works anchored by the gourd. Her award-winning gourd works were featured in many juried exhibits, shows and galleries. She then decided to fulfill a long-held desire to paint, studying under the tutelage of University of North Florida Professor Emeritus Paul Ladnier and taking painting workshops in a continuing effort to learn and grow as an artist.
Gail has received several awards for her paintings and has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions, including Oil Painters of America Salon Show in 2020, the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society Small Works Exhibition in 2022 and the Art League of Hilton Head's 2023 National Biennale Exhibition. She had her first solo exhibition, titled Embracing Nature, in 2022 at the Lightner Museum in Saint Augustine. In 2023, the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jacksonville, FL invited Gail to have a solo exhibition in conjunction with its major traveling exhibition - American Made - Paintings & Sculpture from the DeMell Jacobsen Collection. She has also exhibited at the Jacksonville International Airport (JIA) in 2018 and again in 2023.
Gail is an associate member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), the National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society (NOAPS and the American Impressionist Society (AIS). She is also a member of First Coast Plein Air Painters in Jacksonville, Florida. Gail lives and works in Saint Augustine, Florida.
Overall, I found the work entered for this exhibition to be of very high quality, which made judging a challenge. Viewing images instead of the actual work is also very challenging and I found some images to be fuzzy, especially when zooming in for details. Since this is an online exhibition, high-resolution images are critical; thus, image quality did factor into my decisions.
In judging a show, I first look through all the entries and note those that first grab my attention. In a second pass, I look for technical skill with the medium, a good composition and then something unique - be it a different way to handle the medium, an unusual color combination, or a captivating composition. From there, choosing between two or three within a category becomes increasingly harder, so it really comes down to what I found compelling about that particular piece.
The awards and comments, first by category and then Best of Show are as follows:
Anabel Rub Pelcher – Sunny Isle Beach, Florida - Anemone M6, A beautifully conceived, intricate form with subtle shifts of color and value. There is so much depth to this piece with its intricate spiny protrusions and deep, dark caverns that yearn for exploration.
Donna Sallee - Pompano Beach, Florida - Surfer Girl. This is such a colorful, happy painting that just drew me right in. It’s a beautiful composition and I love how the artist handled the light and shadow.
Kirsten Hines – Miami, Florida - Heron Love This photograph tells a very compelling story; it’s a unique perspective that captures a fleeting moment in time. The tonal palette of the Spanish Moss provides a subtle, textural background for highlighting the subjects. And the glimpses of sky add context and contrast.
Susan Nanna Casbarro – Cooper City, Florida Night & Day – Searching for Balance, This piece is so well designed with a variety of forms, both sinuous and straight-edged. There is a richness of color and texture, and the varied topography adds a sculptural dimension.
Susan Convery – Plantation, Florida - A Beautiful Day This complex composition is beautifully executed with the figures at the table on the left leading you to the next table and around the corner where the light-filled park beckons. And the figures are so natural that I felt I could walk right into the painting and join the conversation!
Heather Mitchell – Pensacola, Florida – Pristine
The unique position of the subject matter immediately caught my attention, with the standing leg leading up through the body and over the arching head to the long beak holding a lacy feather; a perfect progression of neutral dark, light, dark and a pop of color at the eye. The handling of the medium and attention to detail is incredible.
This painting makes a dynamic statement with a limited palette and a simple, straightforward statement. The artist exhibits a mastery with this medium. It is, indeed, a pristine work of art!
